Bio: The freedom that exists in our world resides in peoples conception that they are living in a state of autonomy. The act of questioning ones freedom is a shocking, almost frightful topic to deeply consider because we all desire to live in complete freedom, but when the idea of freedom is thoroughly dissected the truth is that there are many factors controlling our every thought, action, and belief. These factors are often taken for granted, but when mentioned in relation to ones freedom, it becomes obvious that they affect the deepest part of our identities. Some philosophers believe that every decision we make is the result of some cause external to our inner self, leading to the conclusion that none of us are truly free. While I agree with the theory that no one is completely free, I differ in my belief as to why that notion appears to be true. The idea that every one of our actions has a cause external to our own ability to make a choice that is devoid of any external influence is known as the theory of hard determinism. This theory is applied to the origins of human responsibility in Susan Wolfs essay, entitled Sanity and the Metaphysics of Responsibility. In this essay, Wolf explains her belief that while every action has a cause, whether it be the way a person is raised or experiences a person has, sanity must be present in a persons psyche in order for them to have the ability to be responsible for their actions.
